I'm in between postdoc jobs. Having a few months of unpaid leave is not the worst thing in the world! Until my contract ended here at Queens University Belfast, I was studying FeCr alloys through computer simulation. And would continue in that area if a job application in Edinburgh, Scotland comes through. If fusion energy can be made to work, those alloys would likely be used to build future power plants.

I like academic research well enough. It gives you probably more freedom to do things the way you think best than just about any other job. The low number of permanent jobs in academia is a bit of a pest, as you have to pack things up and move every couple of years. On the other hand, that does have its nice sides too.

I'm not exactly following a dream. I'm quite ok with the life I'm living, but I suppose I am living a pretty regular life. I chose this direction early on at school because I was good at math, physics, chemistry, etc. And as I moved through the latter stages of college, I developed a strong interest in physics research. I like finding out how small pieces of nature work. So in that sense I'm following what came naturally. That's not a bad thing.

greets,
Peter
