They were "innocent" in that they were without sin, but they weren't stupid or unlearned. They were the highest creation. Think of them as the 10X version of humankind and the rest of us as the 2.435 version that becomes worse rather than improves. Their cognitive abilities and logic and all those other lofty qualities of human ability were at their peak.
