I have a feeling with the OP first question is that you could ask 100 christians that question and get 100 different answers.

Sounds like a YEC to me. So the guy is an idiot, an uneducated idiot. I would say your average Joe Christian in the street quite happily accepts evolution. I have a feeling that even the Catholic church now accepts it (I might be wrong). The problem is that the more fundamental believers are putting everyday christian on the spot with Adam and Eve vs evolution. They purposely give an argument that only has two answers. If you are sensible you call them idiots and give them the other chioces that are there. But Joe Christian doesn't want his and panics, puts them in a quandry and they will come down on the side of their religion. The fundie puts it down as score one to them and claims a false victory.

Hi. I think you're probably right about getting 100 different answers from 100 different Christians to the same question. Also, I'm sure the guy I referred to is a young Earth fundy, as you say, but I know a few of those now and that's a worrying trend here as you'll no doubt understand being in the UK too. I would be less worried if the Christians I know were less well educated, but they are graduates types with positions of responsibility (one in HR, how does that happen?).

I'm interested in finding out how important The Bible is to average Christians because I've always assumed that they took it to be the word of God. If so, I'm keen to find out if they've considered the fact that according to Genesis the first lie was told by God, and the first human family created the first murderer. Also, the perfect state for a Human (i.e. the way God made Man) is to be ignorant of knowledge of good and evil and unashamedly naked, but devout Christians typically disapprove of nakedness and are among the most opinionated about what constitutes good and evil behaviour.

Cheers

Is it safe to say you are taking this story literally then? There is another way to read it-as parable. Try it sometime, I think you will discover it has much more meaning than this.

Blessings
