The Flood
Now I have read through some of the old posts on this subject, and to say that some of the YEC rubbish spouted is complete BS is an understatement. This is more on the general history of flood myths in general.
Now it has been mentioned on other threads that many cultures have a flood myth, and if you google Flood myth you will get various myths from around the world. This does actually help disprove that the Genesis sccount is false. After all it says that just Noah and his family escaped. Well other culture seem to think that they did as well. It is also widely acknowledged outside the fundie camps that the genesis myth is derived from the older Sumerian myth from Gilgamesh.
Now they say every myth or story has a nugget of truth behind it. The how about that the flood myths are a hold over from pre-historic times passed on by oral tradition before humans had learned to write. A collective memory if you like.
Now we know that 30 000 years ago that the world was gripped in an Ice age. This meant that sea levels were much lower than they are now. Even areas in the North sea were plains that were used by hunter gatherers. Also evidenced in the land bridges that did exist between landmasses that have long since gone. We also know that the ice started to retreat as the planet warmed up. The Earth undergoes various hot and cold cycles, we are still coming out of a cold cycle. We are now aware of global warming and the rising of the sea. 30 000 the same was happening, but our ancestors didn't know about climate, planetary wobble, hot and cold phases, all they saw was their previous plains get flooded. To them it would have been a catastrophe beyond their understanding. Were their tribal gods angry with them, did they annoying the spirits? We know that once the mediterranean sea was a dryless plain. Imagine what primitive man would have made of that when it became a sea again. Of course all these observations would have made it into folklore and tribal stories. Something to remind and pass onto other generations. Eventually they became the stoires of legend and myth. In some cultures they were replaced by a more dominant tribe moving in and when writing made its apperance it literally became set in stone. Once in stone it is difficult to change, especially when it becomes myth and stories of gods and spirits.
So, to conclude, is it more likely that the genesis flood myth is just that, a tribal story that has passed into legend and the realms of myth? Nothing more than an embellished story, once told by a village shaman that has now snowballed into and argument that fundies believe really happened.
