Default Crocodiles in the city

ok, true story. On Sunday when I turned up for church I noticed Policemen at the back of our church. As I swung around the corner I also noticed Policemen on the other side. The other side of what you ask? The other side of the small water canal. Wondering what was going on, and being the big "dorrie" (sticky beak) that I am - I enquired. A crocodile was spotted eating a dog. Yes, a crocodile was eating a dog!! Now our church is not out in the middle of the sticks, our church is in inner Cairns. But there's more. Two local boys who live right beside this canal, went that night, caught the crocodile and killed it. The animal activists are calling for the two boys (age 12 & 14) to be fined a hefty $16000 each for the killing. The boys have told the local media they did it for the safety of their neighbours.

We have a crocodile living in a local pool of water in another urban area of Cairns, also a crocodile was spotted last week sunning itself close to another water canal within the city and our beaches have been closed due to the sightings of crocodiles. What gets me is these young boys were able to catch this 1.8m croc and the "animal activists" did nothing to remove the croc in the first place. Our local mayor has stated the QLD Parks & Wildlife service should offer these boys a job and show them how to do it correctly.

I'm sure there are other links with the story however here is one local and national link to read the story.

yup its an unfortunate fact of life that with man and nature living in such close proximity...the two worlds will collide! it bugs me that ppl will moan about what these boys did..and yes it was hardly humane..BUT as u say...why are there not patrols etc in place to capture the crocs and release them somewhere nore suitable?
if a child had been eaten/attacked,,what would the response have been i wonder?
here in england we dont have crocs!but theres an increasing problem with urban foxes...easy food from rubbish left out by ppl attracting them into towns and gardens.and some ppl activly feeding them.they may think they are cute and cuddly...but they decimate bird populatins..and spread disease and attack domestic pets.
i would never advocate animal cruelty...but good animal husbandry IS necessary!IMO

That's amazing. I wonder what the parents of those two boys thought when they knew how close to danger they had put themselves - I dread to think! The only place we see crocodiles here is in the zoo - I can't imagine seeing one close up!
