Violence against Christians condemned in Tamil Nadu protest
According to news carried by The Hindu newspaper, hundreds of Christians cutting across denominational barriers participated in a silent rally in Udhagamandalam, Tamil Nadu, on Sunday, January 13.
The silent rally was led by the Bishop of Udhagamandalam, A. Amalraj,
and included hundreds of Christians who demanded action against those responsible for the perpetration of violence against Christians in some parts of Orissa recently.
They sported black badges and carried placards bearing messages which condemned the assault on Christians in Orissa.
In a memorandum sent to the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, M. Karunanidhi, the organizers asked him to use his stature and position in the Union Government to help the affected Christian families in Orissa.

Stating that relief should be provided immediately, they said that their losses should be compensated. Damaged houses should be rebuilt. The cases relating to the violence should be dealt with by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and a judicial inquiry should be ordered.
They also said that "communal outfits which posed a threat to the unity of the nation and indulged in anti-social activities should be banned." They added, "The government should take steps to safeguard the interests of the minority Christian community."
