Plato did not like the way the poets and artists of Greece portrayed their gods. In "The Republic", he felt that these things he deemed wrong should not be allowed.
"It is not only to the poets therefore that we must issue orders requiring them to represent good character in their poems or not to write at all; we must issue similar orders to all artists and prevent them from portraying bad character, ill discipline, meanness, or ugliness in painting, sculpture, architecture, or any work of art, and if they are unable to comply they must be forbidden to practice their art. We shall thus prevent our guardians being brought up among representations of what is evil, and so day by day and little by little, by feeding as it were in an unhealthy pasture, insensibly doing themselves grave psychological damage. Our artists and craftsmen must be capable of perceiving the real nature of what is beautiful, and then our young men, living as it were in a good climate, will benefit because all the works of art they see and hear influence them for good, like the breezes from some healthy country with what is rational and right."--Plato

Is that parallel with some very famous anti-theist's objections to our Bible? Scary. The Republic is upon us at last.

Blessings

Wow, that's a good question. I see some truth in it, for sure, and I have very strong objections to pornography, violence, and Satanic material in the arts. That shouldn't be allowed at all. But I also see the "man as a product of his environment" flaw in Plato's thinking. Good point you made, and great quote to think about.

Hope you like this quote!

Plato was talking specifically about the gods. He wanted the poets to stop portraying them in the hitherto widely accepted manner. He thought that teaching it caused children psychological damage, and widely accepted beliefs should be snuffed out at their source.

I personally believe in a free society. I object to the same things as you do, but I can't say they should not be allowed. I choose to avoid those things instead.

Dude, you've got some really awesome quotes.

"The greatest dangers to liberty lurk in insidious encroachment by men of zeal--well-meaning but without understanding."

I do not want to get into too deep over this but God has always been!

The churches have not, and since they have to my thoughts the separation between mankind and God has never been greater, just look at the cruelty done by these religions with the name of God on their lips as if God ordained these cruelties!

Peace and Light
