Default Know any good quotes?

Know any good sayings that come to mind? A set of words that you use as a motto or an affirmation? Any TV or movie lines that strike you as important? Whether it's serious or funny, this is where it gets said!

Just a thought: Unless you have several quotes that have a common subject (in that case, they can all go into the same post), try to keep it limited to one quote per post.

Let's see what we come up with!

"There are no shortcuts to any place worth going."

Ok, here's a few having to do with reasoning, logic, proofs, evidence, etc.

Wow, great quotes! Definitely thought-provoking!

Here are a few on writing techniques.

"I do not choose the right word. I get rid of the wrong one."

-- A. E. Housman

"The difference between the right word and the almost right word is the difference between lightning and the lightning bug."

-- Mark Twain (a.k.a Samuel Clemens)

"What is written without effort is read without pleasure."

-- Samuel Johnson

Hi John,

Interesting quotes. For the next round I'll make it a slighly naughty one. Although I do know some Christians (they call themselves 'followers of Christ' rather than 'Christians', since the latter has become more of a slur than something to be proud of in their view) who agree.

"Jesus is a cool dude whose reputation has been ruined by his fan club."
UrbanDictionary.com

And I think this is a statement a good number of atheists might agree with too.

greets,
Peter

"Coming to the Bible through commentaries is much like looking at a landscape through garret windows, over which generations of unmolested spiders have spun their webs." --Henry Ward Beecher

"There is a way of reading the Bible that seems to leave God far away, off in the shadows somewhere. It is all information and technicalities and knowledge, but it feels like you're sitting with your back towards God. You come up against a difficulty or question, and you go to books, you ask pastors, friends, strangers on the internet, anyone but Him. Gradually God gets smaller and dimmer." --Unknown

The Word of God well understood and religiously obeyed is the shortest route to spiritual perfection. And we must not select a few favorite passages to the exclusion of others. Nothing less than a whole Bible can make a whole Christian. --AW. Tozer

Blessings

Someday, great quotes. FHA, believe it or not, I very much agree with your quote from UrbanDictionary. I am a believer in Christ, and I have seen the way God has been tarnished throughout history, especially today--by Christians! And the way some Christians behave--with pride and arrogance and intolerance (Admittedly, I've been that way enough myself to know some of the signs)--makes the God I love look like a pestilence.

Here's this post's quote:

"A government big enough to give you everything you want is big enough to take away everything you have."

-- Former U.S. Senator Barry Goldwater

Martin Luther, 475 years ago, was asked, "How do we love and serve God? How do we love and serve our neighbors?" and Luther answered, "In commune per vocatione." We love and serve God, we love and serve our neighbors, in community, through vocation. And let it be so with us.

I heard this really cool saying over Christmas....

Never let common sense cloud your judgement!

What you do in life echoes in eternity! (from the movie Gladiator, but so true!)

All good men need to do for evil to prevail is.... nothing!

An awesome quote by Adam Burke! "All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing." Thanks for posting that, Dave!

"Someday, all the years in my life are going to go by, and I'm going to be a little old man near the end of everything, looking back on everything I did, everything I said, everything I accomplished, every single obstacle that I conquered--and my dying words before I go to Heaven will be as follows:

"'Holy cow! What a ride!'"

I know you wanted it one line of thought per post, but i only have 2 at the moment.

"military glory is the attractive rainbow that rises in showers of blood". Abraham Lincoln.
I dunno why i like it, but i do.

And the other one is
"Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day
Teach a man to fish and he eats for a lifetime
Give a man religion and he dies praying for a fish"
