Ever wondered how to use a capo? You will see many worship leaders using capos. So for those of you who havent yet fully understood how a capo works. Lets start by taking a look at a Capo itself
The Capo
The one that is used a lot and you will find most music stores have them in stock is the kaiser capo, Pretty much its just a case of squeezing it to open it up, placing the rubber area of the kaiser on the fretboard and across the strings as shown in the pic above.. Actually the one above is a short one allowing for alternate tunings, usually it covers the entire strings.
In Action
Steps
- Play a C chord on your guitar.
- Put the capo between the first and seconds frets close to the second fret, but not directly on top of it.
- Clamp or strap down the capo tight enough to make sure none of the strings are buzzing.
- Play the C chord again. It has now moved up a half-tone to C#.
- Move up the capo to the third fret. You are now playing in the key of D. Note how much brighter the same chord sounds in this position.
- Move the capo up and down the fingerboard.
- Notice the difference in sound depending on capo position. Determine which one sounds best to you.
- Experiment. Play different chords using the capo. Find out the best key for your own vocal range.
Why?
Well alot of worship leaders find that for small acoustic sessions say in a home, its an easy way to play chords from a song in their vocal range. Meaning You can place it on the 3rd fret or any fret and play a D and it will actually be a different chord you are playing.
So people do this aswell because, trying to play say a Fm7 barre chord is easier if you play it with a capo on in a chord formation that is easier for you.
